SBE Annual Dinner Report
SBE Annual Dinner
Well over 200 members and guests gathered together on 11 February for the Society's Annual Dinner, with the Nash Room at the Institute of Directors once again providing surroundings conducive to good conversation and a sense of occasion. Our guest at this year's event was Lucas Papademos, Vice President, European Central Bank. Mr Papademos, not afraid to tackle the big issues of the day, spoke on the global credit crisis, and suggested in the process that lower ECB interest rates might be needed to maintain price stability.
A very informed talk was followed (unsurprisingly, given the topicality of the subject and the professional interests of the audience) by a very lively discussion. The ECB's own policy approach came under close scrutiny, but Mr Papademos, dealt deftly with a wide range and number of questions.
Bronwyn Curtis, on behalf of the Society, thanked both Standard Life Investments for generously sponsoring the dinner for a sixth year, and KPMG for its continuing sponsorship of the Rybczynski Prize.

Lord Burns with Ian Bright
Lord Burns then presented this year's Rybczynski Prize to the winning entrant, Ian Bright.

Ian won the 2008 Rybczynski Price for his essay "Japanese lessons for an Anglo-Saxon banking crisis", which explored the relevance of Japan's experience in the 1990s to the global markets today.
Our congratulations to Ian, whose essay will be published in the next edition of the Society's journal, The Business Economist.

Lord Burns,
Lucas Papademos
and Bronwyn Curtis
