Annual Conference
Tuesday 23 June, 9.00am-1.00pm, ICE
From Financial Risk to Economic Crisis
The clock is ticking, so don't forget to contact the secretariat for your ticket for this year's SBE Annual Conference. The default of Lehman Brothers last September marked a new stage in the financial crisis. With credit drying up, economic activity around the world collapsed and declines in real and financial sector activity became mutually reinforcing. What started as a problem in the money markets threatened to turn into the most severe global economic downturn since the Great Depression, triggering policy responses on an unprecedented scale.
There is no shortage of critical questions at this juncture. Spencer Dale, Willem Buiter, Erik Berglöf, Robert Chote and Andrew Smithers, with Evan Davis in the chair, will offer their views - and invite you to share yours - in what promises to be another lively Annual Conference. More details are provided in the accompanying flyer; call or email the secretariat (contact details are at the foot of this newsletter) for your place.
Membership Renewal
As members who attended last November's AGM will remember, the Council was given approval to freeze the annual subscription for 2009/10 - a year when it would normally have been raised - in the event of their judging this to be appropriate in the economic circumstances. Subscriptions now being due, the Council has decided to exercise this power. Your annual subscription for the coming year therefore remains unchanged, making it even better value for money.
Your membership is due for renewal by 1 July. A renewal form may be found here or you can call the secretariat and renew over the phone by credit card.
Do contact us promptly to make sure that you don't miss out on what promises to be a packed year of meetings, Masterclasses and, of course, the annual conference and dinner (with more on the Rybczynski Prize, overleaf), and that you continue to get the most out of being part of the UK's largest professional network for business economists.

Rybczynski Prize 2009
Now is the time to start thinking about entering this year's competition for the Rybzcynski Prize. This prestigious award is given to the year's best piece of writing on an issue of importance to business economists. It offers the opportunity to see your work gain a higher profile among professional colleagues - and, of course, to win the £3000 prize so generously sponsored by KPMG.
Essays, which must be submitted by December, can be written especially for the competition or have been published during the course of 2009, and the judges will be looking for around 3000 (with an absolute maximum of 4000) well-written words. Previous winners have included Roger Bootle, Simon Briscoe, Joanne Collins, Fergus Hicks, Thomas Mayer, Pam Woodall, Kevin Daly, four Italian economists (jointly) from UniCredit Global Research in Milan, and Ian Bright. Entry forms will be mailed with the July newsletter.
You can also use the online form and see all details here on our Rybzcynski Prize page
